Try the Cambodian cuisine

You can go beyond the typical meal and check out the street food and local food stalls to try their snacks and other yummy authentic dishes! For vegans, head to The Vibe Café, offering vegan homemade recipes focused on Cambodian cuisine.

Visit the historical heritages

Phnom Penh’s history isn’t the most cheerful one. You can learn more about its gruesome history and how the city came to be from the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and The Killing Fields. This is an essential part of Cambodia’s history and if you would like to delve deeper into it, these are the places to visit. Other notable attractions are The Independence Monument, National Museum, and The Cambodian Living Arts.

You can also visit the Ta Prohm Temple, which has an amazing stone monument and has similarities compared to the Angkor Wat. There are also other temples you can visit, such as the Wat Phnom, a traditional Buddhist temple that locals visit regularly.

Head to the markets

Visit Phsar Thmey, which is the central market of the city. It’s quite different compared to other city markets across its neighboring countries. It used to be the biggest indoor market around Asia and now offers everything Cambodian, may it be local fruits and vegetables, clothes, jewelry, handicrafts, and more

You can get a few souvenirs here and snap some Instagrammable photos with its amazing architecture, which was designed by French architects Wladimir Koundorouff and Jean Desbois.

If you want to visit more markets, The Olympic Market is known for its fabrics and local delicacies.

The visa situation

It’s recommended for digital nomads to apply for a business visa or single-entry tourist visa, both of which cost $30 each. These visas would have a validity of 30 days, and if you plan to stay longer, you may want to consider applying for an E visa.

For tourist visa holders, you can extend for a maximum of 30 days. A business visa extension will cost $300, lasting for a year. With E visas, there is an infinite extension possibility, which costs $35 for every 30 days.

There are a few countries that don’t require a visa when visiting Cambodia, which are:

  • Philippines
  • Malaysia
  • Singapore

The best season to visit Phnom Penh

The best months to visit Phnom Penh are from November to February. These are when the rainfall, humidity, and temperatures are far lower. That way, you can enjoy the sun without the overbearing heat.
