Attractions in Phnom Penh for Nomads

Once you’re done with work, it’s time to hit the town and see what it has to offer! Beyond coworking spaces, Phnom Penh has so much to offer for locals and travelers alike. To help you find out what to do for fun and adventure, here are some stunning places and enjoyable activities you must try.

Try the Cambodian cuisine

Cambodian cuisine is a unique and simple one. The typical Cambodian meal would consist of soup, salad, the main course (usually fish, vegetables, and rice). Then, there will be a dessert, usually consisting of fresh fruits and sticky rice.

You can go beyond the typical meal and check out the street food and local food stalls to try their snacks and other yummy authentic dishes! For vegans, head to The Vibe Café, offering vegan homemade recipes focused on Cambodian cuisine.

Visit the historical heritages

Phnom Penh’s history isn’t the most cheerful one. You can learn more about its gruesome history and how the city came to be from the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and The Killing Fields. This is an essential part of Cambodia’s history and if you would like to delve deeper into it, these are the places to visit. Other notable attractions are The Independence Monument, National Museum, and The Cambodian Living Arts.

You can also visit the Ta Prohm Temple, which has an amazing stone monument and has similarities compared to the Angkor Wat. There are also other temples you can visit, such as the Wat Phnom, a traditional Buddhist temple that locals visit regularly.

Head to the markets

Visit Phsar Thmey, which is the central market of the city. It’s quite different compared to other city markets across its neighboring countries. It used to be the biggest indoor market around Asia and now offers everything Cambodian, may it be local fruits and vegetables, clothes, jewelry, handicrafts, and more

You can get a few souvenirs here and snap some Instagrammable photos with its amazing architecture, which was designed by French architects Wladimir Koundorouff and Jean Desbois.

If you want to visit more markets, The Olympic Market is known for its fabrics and local delicacies.

Wrapping It Up

While it isn’t the most beautiful among the capital cities in Southeast Asia, Phnom Penh is one of the most interesting ones. In Phnom Penh, you will find structures created during French colonialism, filled with so much culture and history.

For those who plan on visiting Phnom Penh, take note of this in your travel plans:

The visa situation

It’s recommended for digital nomads to apply for a business visa or single-entry tourist visa, both of which cost $30 each. These visas would have a validity of 30 days, and if you plan to stay longer, you may want to consider applying for an E visa.

For tourist visa holders, you can extend for a maximum of 30 days. A business visa extension will cost $300, lasting for a year. With E visas, there is an infinite extension possibility, which costs $35 for every 30 days.

There are a few countries that don’t require a visa when visiting Cambodia, which are:

  • Laos
  • Philippines
  • Malaysia
  • Singapore

The best season to visit Phnom Penh

The best months to visit Phnom Penh are from November to February. These are when the rainfall, humidity, and temperatures are far lower. That way, you can enjoy the sun without the overbearing heat.

Now that you know where to go to work and play in Phnom Penh, start planning when to visit and what places to head to! Happy traveling and stay safe!
