Korea Digital Nomad Visa Information – How to Apply

South Korea officially launched its Digital Nomad Visa, known as the Workcation Visa (F-1-D Visa), in January 2024. This forward-thinking initiative is tailored for foreign professionals who want to work remotely for companies based outside of South Korea while experiencing the country’s rich cultural heritage and vibrant lifestyle.

As one of Asia’s rising hotspots for digital nomads, South Korea offers an irresistible combination of modern infrastructure, dynamic entertainment industries, and deep cultural traditions. Global phenomena like K-pop and K-dramas draw international attention, and its  efficient public transportation, lightning-fast internet, and unique fusion of tradition and modernity make Korea a standout destination for remote workers.

In this guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know about South Korea’s Digital Nomad Visa, including its eligibility criteria, duration, requirements, and application process.

Key Features of the Korean Digital Nomad Visa

  • Duration: Up to 2 years (initial 1 year + potential 1-year extension)
  • Eligibility: Remote workers aged 18 or older with at least one year of experience in their current industry
  • Requirement
    • Annual income of at least twice South Korea’s GNI per capita (approx. USD 64,000 in 2024)Comprehensive medical insurance with a minimum coverage of KRW 100 million

South Korea’s Digital Nomad Visa Duration

The Workcation Visa allows remote workers to stay in South Korea for maximum 2 years – an initial one-year period, with the possibility of extending it for another year.

This makes it the longest-duration digital nomad visa in East Asia, exceeding the 6-month stays permitted by Japan’s Digital Nomad Visa or Taiwan’s Digital Nomad Visa. For remote workers seeking an extended base in the region, South Korea’s visa provides a highly attractive opportunity.

Who Can Apply for Korea’s Digital Nomad Visa? – Eligibility

To qualify for the visa, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be employed by a company outside of South Korea.
  2. Have at least one year of experience in their current industry.
  3. Be at least 18 years old (children of applicants are exempt from this age requirement).

Eligible dependents, including spouses and children under 18, can also accompany the applicant, provided appropriate documentation is submitted.

Requirements

To qualify for South Korea’s Workcation Visa, applicants must meet specific financial and insurance criteria to ensure they can comfortably support themselves and access necessary healthcare during their stay.

Income Requirement

Applicants must demonstrate a yearly income that is at least double South Korea’s GNI per capita. In 2024, this figure is approximately 84.96 million won (USD 65,000). This ensures applicants have the financial means to sustain themselves during their stay.

Insurance Requirement

Comprehensive health insurance is mandatory, with a minimum coverage of KRW 100 million to cover hospital treatments and repatriation.

Bringing Your Family

The Workcation Visa allows applicants to bring their immediate family members. Spouses and children under the age of 18 are eligible to accompany the primary applicant.

To include family members in the application, specific documents are required. Spouses must provide a marriage certificate and a criminal record certificate, while children over the age of 14 need a criminal record certificate as well. Additionally, birth certificates must be submitted for all children to confirm the relationship.

How to Apply for Korea Digital Nomad Visa

Korea Digital Nomad Visa – Is it worth getting one?

South Korea is an attractive destination, offering a unique blend of rich culture, modern infrastructure, and vibrant entertainment scene. If you’re a digital nomad who enjoys South Korea’s unique culture and lifestyle, the Workcation Visa is an excellent option, as it allows remote workers to stay in the country for up to 2 years. This extended duration, combined with the country’s efficient transportation, fast internet, and diverse lifestyle opportunities, makes it an appealing choice for those seeking an immersive experience.

On the downside, the visa’s relatively high income requirement may pose a challenge for some applicants. With an annual income threshold of twice South Korea’s GNI per capita, only those earning around USD 65,000 or more will qualify.

The introduction of the Workcation Visa is a strategic move by the South Korean government to attract talented remote workers, boost the local economy, and showcase the country’s cultural and natural treasures. For those who meet the criteria, this visa offers a unique and rewarding way to explore South Korea while continuing their professional journey.
